1001 Poems. Venere and Madonna / Jaime Rosa

I

I

Oh, woman burning in your lava, like a lamp in the night!, your
Body´s great flood water sweetly overflows its banks, and that
Is your law and aureole, full moon goddess!, yours alone are
The hands that reachs the wind´s caresses as it fondles
Feathers, heaven leaves a trail in You before returning to the
Start.

Nothing has changed since the days of Babylonia, nothing has
Changed since the days of Thebes, with its one thousand doors…
The seas have yet to drink up their own vastness, and
Recite the endless litany.

And who has seen their wings with moonlight stained on high?
And who has fallen when the weight of agonizing dreams became
Too much?…Oh, enreachable summit where twin beaked
Eagles fly to be born!, Is there in your rock strength enough
To turn away from death?

And you bring us the night that deep down is a moon river
Flowing and a lamp when darkness rules.
